Lighter & brighter:
re-imagining the past
Inspired by our very first MetaMATERIAL installation— our Gray Screen, this custom dining room divider showcases 32 unique resin tiles of mixed translucent and opaque resin inside in a powder-coated metal cantilevered frame. Perfectly complementing the soft ombre of the wallpaper, resin dining table, and shapes and textures of the rest of the space, our room divider glows and shifts as light passes through the kaleidoscope of non-repeating patterns.
We borrowed the palette from our original room Gray Screen but made it lighter and brighter per our client’s request.
After finalizing our material design with our client, we hand-mix all of our pigments for the project and start casting the intricately shaped inserts. Much like the rings of a tree, our resin grows layer by layer (literally color by color) to create dynamic patterns. Each insert is cast in our studio using various techniques to achieve the different line qualities and pattern variations needed. Starting small and working our way up to larger forms, the resulting shapes and patterns are made intuitively through a process of addition and reduction.
We pour blocks and sheets, then cut and recast the pieces using our digital renderings to guide the way. As we cast the different iterations of the project, we collaborate with the organic nature of the material and let chance and play create the final pattern. Like a big puzzle, we cut out and interlock our inserts and then respond to the pieces left over to make new combinations of color and shape beyond that which we initially planned.
After the final panels are cut to dimension and surfaced, we sand and polish them to a seductively smooth satin finish.
